Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program

Conemaugh East Hills

The next Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program starts Thursday April 2 at 5:30pm.  All sessions will be conducted at Conemaugh East Hills. The eight week program is led by a licensed psychologist and provides the participants with tools to reduce the effects of stress.  Research supports that the majority of individuals who participate in MBSR programs experience lasting results. These can include: 

  • Fewer physical and psychological symptoms
  • Increased ability to relax
  • Decreased pain
  • New coping strategies
  • More energy and enthusiasm

The program is covered by most insurance plans and requires a pre-program consultation.   Standard deductibles and co pays apply. The program is billed as one initial evaluation and nine group sessions.   The program is billed to the CHS health care plan under codes that are paid at Level A.

The course covers ACLS Algorithms, airway management, rhythm recognition, high quality CPR, ACS (Acute Coronary Syndrome), stroke and more. The course is intended for physicians, nurses, paramedics and any medical professionals who respond to cardiovascular emergencies in and out of the hospital. There is a written and skill test that must be passed in order to receive a completion card. The initial course offers 10.5 Advanced CE Hours.

Mechanics of the Lower Extremity and Shoulder Complex

Faculty:  Curt Kindel, PT, MPT, PhD, OCS
Target Audience:  PTs, PTAs, OTs, OTAs, and ATs

This course will explore the biomechanical foundation of tissue and joints of the lower extremity and shoulder complex.  These concepts will be applied to the structure of the hip, knee, ankle/foot, and shoulder articulations.  Function of the joints in isolation and throughout the kinematic chain will be discussed for ambulation and other functional movements.  Rehabilitation techniques such as therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular re-education, and manual therapy will be evaluated for the lower extremity and shoulder.   

Objectives:  

1.  Describe how muscle architecture determines function.

2.  Apply concepts of biomechanics to the evaluation and treatment of the structures of the lower extremity and shoulder.

3.  Apply biomechanical principles to common diagnoses and pathologies of the joints of the lower extremity and shoulder.

4.  Discuss the typical compensations individuals make when pathologies interfere with normal motion or function.

5.  Evaluate rehabilitation techniques of the joints of the lower extremity and shoulder complex based upon biomechanical principles and concepts.

6.  Evaluate therapeutic exercises based on length-tension relationship and joint mechanics for the lower extremity and shoulder.

PHTLS (Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support)
8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

PHTLS teaches knowledge that includes an understanding of anatomy and physiology, patient care skills and the limitations of time and blood loss, and the need to get the patient to the operating room as quickly as possible. The student will use critical thinking skills to make and carry out decisions that will enhance the survival of the trauma patient. The PHTLS course is based on the Advanced Trauma Life Support course for physicians developed by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. Therefore, it follows the principles of care of trauma patients as developed by the Committee on Trauma to assure a consistent team approach to the trauma patient.

The PHTLS Provider course is a 2 day (16hr) course designed to provide the practicing prehospital care provider with a specific body of knowledge related to prehospital assessment and care of the adult and pediatric trauma patient. The course presents interactive scenario based lectures with hands on physical assessment of patients and practice of trauma skills.

The PHTLS Refresher course is a 1 day (8hr) course designed to provide the current PHTLS provider with an update on the prehospital adult and pediatric trauma patient treatment. The course presents interactive scenario based lectures with hands on physical assessment of patients and practice of trauma skills.

Prerequisites: First Responder, EMT-B, EMT-Paramedic, RN.
Refresher courses must possess a PHTLS or ITLS provider status.
Precourse preparation is necessary for successful completion of the course, and includes access to the current PHTLS 8
th Edition Textbook and completion of a pretest.

Successful completion of the program consists of the following:

-                      Attendance at both days of the course

-                      A score of 76% or better on the written exam final.

-                      Proficiency at the skills testing stations

Upon successful completion, a PHTLS certification and card will be issued for a four year period.
